Insurance premiums for most organisations are a significant annual expenditure and ways to control this spend are often a high priority.

Premium levels are driven by many different factors including business conditions, claims experience, general market conditions and the quality of the organisation's risk management. Organisations cannot influence general market conditions as these are affected by national and global events / incidents and the business conditions are dictated by what you do as an organisation. The area that individual organisations can influence, to keep future premiums as low and stable as possible, is to have a robust and effective risk management process in place to address the present risks in their business.

businessRisc seeks to provide clients with information and guidance to support their own risk management programmes to reduce the potential for adverse events, incidents, injuries and long term ill health, and consequently have a positive impact on claims performance.

The guidance and toolkits contained within the site are arranged by class of insurance cover and address the most common causes of claim that we see.

In addition, the loss lessons section seeks to highlight issues and learning opportunities arising out of actual incidents that other customers have had the misfortune to experience.

I have been Head of Department since January 2011 prior to which I was responsible for managing the risk engineering in the commercial business having joined MSIG in October 2007. I am a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, holding a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Masters in Risk Management.

Prior to joining MSIG, my career had been in industry. Initially starting out in the steel industry I held a variety of roles within maintenance and project engineering functions before progressing into the chemical sector and then finally into food manufacturing for a large UK national. During this time I moved from engineering into health and safety and finally into broader risk management roles.

Keen to promote continual improvement through challenging ourselves to the way we view and manage risk and hence how we help and support both clients and underwriting, we have adopted an old Henry Ford quote as our team focal point, 'If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got.' This simple but powerful statement is a constant reminder that you cannot sit still in today’s dynamic, ever changing risk based environment.

I joined MSIG in 2008 and in 2012 became the Casualty Risk Engineering Manager. I am a Chartered Safety Practitioner and started life after graduating working for The Health & Safety Executive as one of HM Inspectors of Health & Safety. After several years with the HSE, I joined a prominent risk management consultancy where I worked for over 15 years in a wide range of industries including construction, utilities, aerospace, heavy engineering, recycling, education and healthcare.

Leading the Casualty Risk Engineering proposition for MSIG allows me to apply my passionate dedication to the prevention of incidents, accidents and claims through innovative and creative risk management programmes. Working closely with our insured clients and brokers means that we can directly influence the cause of claims resulting in an unparalleled track record of improvements in the loss ratio.
I have been the regional Risk Engineering Manager with MSIG since joining the company in January 2012. I am a Chartered Safety Practitioner and hold a Masters degree in Occupational Health and Safety Management. Prior to joining MSIG, my career has been in industry, commencing in precision engineering before progressing into sawmilling, manufacturing, warehousing and distribution. I have been able to gain a wealth of experience and business acumen covering a wide range of cross class risk management exposures, from shop floor to executive board level.

MSIG Risk Engineering allows me to work closely with underwriting and claims colleagues, to strive continually to provide assistance and support to clients with innovative and value added risk management initiatives. At the same time, I aim to provide a clear understanding of operational and economic constraints that our clients may find themselves presented with.
I joined the world of insurance on a graduate training scheme in 1992 and since then have worked with many national and multi-national organisations in a wide range of industries. I have a background in Building Surveying and specialise in providing risk engineering advice in the disciplines of property, security, business continuity and construction.

To me the key to successful risk engineering is ensuring we learn from losses, sharing best practice across our whole client base and ensuring that we do not forget the lessons from the past. Our close internal and external relationships are key to our success and ensuring our clients are prepared for any eventuality in an increasingly volatile and changeable world is paramount.
I have been a Risk Engineer with MSIG since September 2012. I am a Chartered Safety Practitioner and hold a degree in Environmental Health and Post Graduate qualification in Occupational Health and Safety. Prior to joining MSIG, I worked as a risk consultant for a major composite insurer and have a wealth of experience in local authority enforcement and industry having held various health and safety roles in food manufacturing, distribution and consultancy.

MSIG Risk Engineering offers a collaborative, challenging environment with wide ranging depth and expertise across all risk management topics including new emerging risks. Constantly challenging traditional boundaries to design and implement innovative and creative risk engineering offerings to our clients. This is a working environment I relish and working together with underwriting and claims colleagues further enhances my understanding of the finer intricacies of the insurance market.
I have been working in the insurance industry as a risk engineer since 2000 and joined MSIG in June 2012. I am a Graduate Member of the Institute of Fire Engineers and holder of the CFPA Advanced European Diploma in Fire Prevention as well as being a certificated member of the Institute of Risk Management and Technical Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health. Prior to joining MSI, I have worked across both property and casualty classes in both the general insurance company market as a consultant to numerous large insurance companies and the Lloyd’s broker market and more recently for Tokio Marine Europe Insurance, servicing their large Japanese clients and developing their local book of business before operating my own consultancy practice for a time.

Since joining MSIG I have had responsibility for managing the risk engineering services for our Real Estate underwriting team, conducting both property and cross-class loss prevention surveys and managing and co-ordinating risk management programmes for large commercial clients and corporate accounts as well as overseeing our risk management offering for Mitsui Europe. This varied multi-discipline role has given me the unique opportunity to build upon my wealth of technical knowledge and experience in loss prevention engineering across a wide range of industry sectors including healthcare, pharmaceutical, food and drink, engineering, manufacturing, warehousing and logistics, leisure, banking, electronics, data services and technology, motor, retail and real estate.
I joined MSIG in September 2014 as our Risk Engineering Support Manager. I am based in our London office within the Syndicate’s Risk Engineering team supporting Corporate and Regional business.

Prior to joining the company I worked in the Risk Engineering Team at Tokio Marine Kiln for 8 years as the Senior Risk Engineering Assistant. During my time at Tokio Marine I developed and managed the Risk Engineering IT infrastructure, coordinated the team’s site activities and acted as the single point of contact for internal and external risk engineers, underwriters, brokers and clients.

In addition to my knowledge in IT systems and workflow coordination, I bring experience in relationship management of both Japanese and non-Japanese clients within both the UK and Europe.
