Corporate Social Responsibility

Our commitment to corporate social responsibility reflects the mission statement of MS&AD Holdings "to contribute to the development of a vibrant society and help secure a sound future for the earth..." to develop products and services that contribute to resolving social issues, reducing our impact on the environment and conserve biodiversity.

MSIG has a business-wide Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Working Group with responsibility for implementation of its CSR Policy. In establishing the CSR Working Group and funding its CSR activities, we recognise responsibility for its impact on society and the need to align its competitive interests with social and environmental values. Our goal is to positively impact society whilst achieving commercial success and making CSR part of the culture of the business.

During the past year, the activities of the CSR Working Group have continued to develop in each of the CSR Policy's four areas of focus, the environment, employees, charity and community. This had a very positive impact.

We are a proactive member of the Lloyd's Market CSR Network.

The comprehensive recycling system we introduced in 2013 has continued to receive employee support. In 2014, we recycled 71% of our waste and on the basis of this success have been awarded a Clean City Award. The current objective is to recycle at least 80% of waste.

We also formalised our membership of ClimateWise through Lloyd's in 2014. We are currently supporting the Heart of England Forest by committing to plant over 4,000 trees in 2016/17. This charity's mission is to reverse centuries of forest destruction and to protect a vast, new, unbroken woodland in the middle of England. This will also enable us to balance our carbon emissions at Fenchurch Avenue Building (FAB).

We seek to encourage diversity in our business and to provide equal opportunities for employee development to ensure that their maximum potential is realised. The Inclusivity Policy recognises these core standards.

All employees share in the success of the business through performance related pay and at the same time are encouraged to maintain an appropriate work/life balance. The Sabbatical Policy entitles each employee to one month's paid leave after 5 years of service. A summer intern programme has been run since 2013, which has received widespread employee engagement.

Employees have voted Great Ormond Street Hospital as the Company's charity for 2015 and 2016. In addition to its two employee nominated charities, we supported the Insurance Charities Awareness Week and a wide range of other charities including Jeans for Genes, MacMillan, Comic Relief, Movember and Great Ormond Street Hospital through matched funding.

A team of 20 employees completed the Great City Race to raise money for Seeing is Believing. Employee fundraising increased by 314%, our matched funding increased by 136% and employee Give As You Earn donations increased by 639% in 2014. In 2014 our nominated charities, The Rainbow Trust and Cancer Research, were very well supported by employees who undertook a number of activities including triathlons and half marathons.

We are committed to the local community through the Lloyd's Community Programme (LCP). Employees are actively involved in two programmes in schools in Tower Hamlets, one of which helps primary school children with reading and maths, and the other provides mentors and work experience for teenage students.

Each employee is encouraged to use the one paid volunteering day per year to which they are entitled to work on a LCP team challenge or regional alternative. In the past this has included clearing derelict land in Hackney Marshes, and assisting with gardening and conservation efforts at Springfield Park.

I've worked in and around the insurance market for over 20 years. Since starting my career with a broking house, I have worked in banking, communications, shipping, life assurance and loss adjusting. I joined MSIG at Lloyd's in 2003 when it was a small syndicate with big ambitions. My role then encompassed reception, facilities, events and corporate identity. Over the years, this has evolved to include branding and communications and I work alongside my colleagues in the Broker Development team. I am Deputy Chair of our CSR Working Group and a member of the Lloyd’s Market CSR Group. I co-manage the IMG (Insurance Marketers Group), a networking group set up in 2010 for insurance professionals working in the insurance industry.
I joined MSIG in 2010 as an Assistant Accountant having just completed my postgraduate degree in Financial Management. My role has evolved from processing monthly journals to managing and reporting the company’s expenses and the Group Reporting Team. My previous experience included working in Broadcast Media, Promotions and Artist Management. I joined the CSR Working Group in 2014.
I was admitted as a solicitor in 1995 and spent 8 years as a litigation lawyer in private practice, most recently in the Insurance and Reinsurance team at CMS Cameron McKenna. In 2003 I moved to Chubb as general counsel of its P&C business in Europe. I moved to MSIG in 2009 as General Counsel and Company Secretary, later becoming Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs in which I oversee the legal, company secretariat and compliance functions. I have held a number of other roles in my MSIG career, including Head of Claims, Company secretary of MSIGHE and General Counsel of MSIEU during its remediation. I serve as a director on the Boards of MSILM, MSIUL AND MSI Ireland.
